Whether you are seeking subtle results or a more dramatic transformation, our board-certified breast implant surgeons are here to guide you to the best breast implants Austin has to offer and help you achieve your vision. Some women who want a subtle size increase choose fat transfer breast augmentation, also called natural breast augmentation, which adds fullness using their own body fat.

Breast Implant Fill Material

Breast implants can be filled with saline or silicone. Both options are FDA-approved and have their own advantages. The best choice of implant for you depends on your unique needs and personal preference.

Breast Implant Profile

An implant’s profile specifies how much it projects from the chest and generally ranges from low to high.

Breast implant profiles

Breast Implant Size

Breast implants are measured in cubic centimeters (cc), not bra cup size. When recommending an implant size, your surgeon will consider your existing breast volume, frame, desired size, and other factors. Read the following posts to learn more about the dos and don’ts of implant sizing and how to choose the right implant size for you.

Silicone vs. Saline Implants

If you are unsure of which type of implant you should choose, here are some of the differences:

Saline Implants

Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution and are available for patients 18 and older. Here are some advantages:

  • Natural, harmless fill material. In the rare instance of a leak, the saline is harmless and absorbed by the body.
  • Require a small incision. They are filled after placement within the breast pocket.
  • Less expensive than silicone implants.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are approved for patients 22 and older. Highly cohesive silicone implants are sometimes called “gummy bear” implants because they have a consistency similar to the gummy candy. Advantages include:

  • Look and feel more natural than saline.
  • Do not slosh or ripple like saline.
  • In case of a shell defect, the filling remains inside the breast capsule until it is surgically removed.

Breast Augmentation Incision Options

Our surgeons take special care to minimize scarring during breast augmentation surgery. The Keller Funnel enables them to use the smallest possible incisions when inserting the implants. They are experienced in the following techniques:

Breast Augmentation Incision Site Options

Inframammary incisions are made along the crease under the breast, where the scar will be concealed by clothing. This incision gives the surgeon unobstructed access to the surgical area.

Periareolar incisions are made along the lower edge of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). This incision is best suited for women with larger areolas, although it can also benefit women with smaller areolas who are receiving saline implants.

Transaxillary incisions are made in a crease in the armpit. While patients appreciate that this incision leaves the breast completely free of scars, it increases the complexity of the surgery.

What Is the Best Placement for Breast Implants?

Breast implants can be placed either under the chest muscle (submuscular) or over the chest muscle (subglandular). Our surgeons typically use the submuscular placement (under the muscle) for the most natural-looking results, especially for patients without much natural breast tissue. This placement comes with a slightly lower risk of capsular contracture, a rare complication of breast augmentation. Recovery with submuscular placement may involve more discomfort and take slightly longer than subglandular. Learn more in this blog post.

Breast Augmentation vs. Breast Lift in Austin, TX?

One of the first issues our doctors consider when a patient comes in for a breast augmentation consultation is whether a breast lift is needed to complete the breast rejuvenation. Breast augmentation surgery adds volume and may slightly elevate the breasts.

Moderate to significant ptosis (sagging) requires a breast lift to remove excess skin, reshape the breasts, and place them higher on the chest.

This patient had a breast lift to restore a more youthful breast shape and position without increasing volume.

Many women combine implants with breast lift surgery, especially after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Can I Combine Breast Enlargement With Other Procedures?

Our surgeons can give you a more comprehensive transformation by combining breast augmentation with other procedures. Popular choices include:

Combining breast and body procedures is often called a Mommy Makeover because it corrects the effects of pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding on the breasts and body.

Recovery After Breast Augmentation Surgery

Here are a few milestones to note during your breast augmentation recovery timeline:

  • Incision care: Incisions typically heal in about 2 to 4 weeks. Until then, keep them clean and dry and avoid wearing garments with underwires or materials that may irritate them.
  • Bruising and swelling: Most bruising and swelling subside within the first 2 weeks. However, you may have some minor residual swelling that lasts up to 6 months.
  • Pain management: Most people only need prescription pain medication for the first few days, then they comfortably transition to over-the-counter painkillers to help with any remaining soreness. One recovery tip is to pick up your pain medication prescription ahead of time so it’s ready as soon as you arrive home from surgery.
  • Return to work: Patients who follow our plastic surgeons’ postoperative instructions typically only need about 3 to 4 days off work.
  • Sleeping: For the first week, minimize swelling by sleeping in a recliner or propping yourself up with pillows, then sleep on your back for another few weeks to ensure favorable healing and an attractive, symmetrical shape.
  • Exercise: Most people are ready to resume strenuous activities within 4 to 6 weeks of surgery, though your exercise timeline may vary. Light activity, such as walking, helps the healing process and may be done as soon as you feel ready. It’s also important to avoid exercises specifically targeting the chest muscles, such as pushups. Other muscle-building exercises should be fine.
  • The “drop and fluff” phase: Your implants will likely appear high and tight on the chest immediately after your surgery. It will take a couple of months for your implants to “drop and fluff,” which means they will settle into a more natural position and feel. We often recommend encouraging this process with gentle breast massages once or twice a day.

Breast Augmentation FAQ

Can breast augmentation correct asymmetrical breasts?

Absolutely. In fact, breast asymmetry is a common reason patients cite for undergoing the procedure. For these patients, our doctors use implants of different sizes, carefully measuring and evaluating to ensure accurate results.

Do I need to wear a special bra after surgery?

Yes. After your surgery is completed, you will be placed in a soft, supportive surgical bra that you will need to wear at all times (except when showering or bathing) for 4 to 6 weeks.

Can I still breastfeed after getting breast implants?

If you hope to breastfeed in the future, tell your surgeon so they can avoid the milk ducts during surgery. Breastfeeding with implants is safe, as they will not affect the quality of your milk.

How long will it take for my breasts to look natural after breast augmentation?

It generally takes about 2 to 3 months for implants to soften and drop into a more natural-looking position. Most patients are thrilled with the results after 6 weeks, but your appearance will continue to improve. Massaging your implants for at least the first 3 to 6 months after surgery can help settle the implants sooner and keep the breast capsule open and soft.

When can I go braless after breast augmentation surgery?

Wearing a supportive bra is one of the best ways to maintain your results, so reserve going braless for special occasions. Wait at least 6 weeks so your breasts have time to heal.

Will I ever need new breast implants?

Both saline and silicone breast implants are more durable than ever. Still, they are not designed to last forever. Each patient’s situation must be assessed on a case-by-case basis, but implants generally are meant to last 10 to 15 years. If you’re thinking about replacing your implants, you’ll find more information on our breast augmentation revision page.

Do breast implants interfere with mammograms?

Breast implants can make performing and reading mammograms more technically difficult. However, placement of the implant underneath the pectoral muscle may interfere less with mammographic examination. Additionally, breast augmentation surgery is so common that virtually all radiologists are experienced at reading mammograms for patients who have implants.

What’s the best age for breast enhancement surgery?

According to statistics compiled by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 85% of breast augmentation patients are between ages 20 and 54. This indicates that there isn’t really a “best age” to get breast enhancement surgery.

If you’re ready to find out how breast augmentation can improve your look and your confidence, request a consultation online with one of our experienced plastic surgeons or call our offices in Austin, Round Rock, West Lake Hills, or Lakeway, Texas, at (512) 244-1439
