What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery or a brow lift, is a cosmetic procedure that can address a variety of concerns around the eyes, including:

  • Droopy or sagging eyelids

  • Bags under the eyes

  • Excess skin or fat on the upper or lower eyelids

For individuals who also have a drooping or heavy brow, we often combine endoscopic brow lift surgery with blepharoplasty.

What Happens During Blepharoplasty Surgery?

The surgeons at our practice will customize your blepharoplasty procedure based on your needs and goals. The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will make incisions in the natural creases of your eyelids to minimize scarring, then adjust excess skin, fat, or muscle as needed. The incisions are then closed with sutures or surgical tape.

What Happens During Blepharoplasty Surgery?

Blepharoplasty can offer a variety of benefits, including:

  • A more youthful and refreshed appearance

  • Improved self-confidence and self-esteem

  • A more alert and awake expression

  • Improved vision in cases where sagging eyelids obstruct vision

If you are tired of looking in the mirror and seeing droopy eyelids or feeling like your eyes make you look tired or older than you actually are, you might be a good candidate for blepharoplasty.

Blepharoplasty FAQs

How long is the recovery after blepharoplasty?

Patients typically experience some swelling and bruising for several days after surgery. Elevating your head as much as possible, even while sleeping, will help minimize this.

Most patients can return to work and resume normal activities within 7 to 10 days after surgery, but it's best to avoid strenuous activities for at least 1 month.

What results can eyelid surgery achieve?

It’s typically recommended that patients avoid wearing contact lenses for at least one week, possibly longer, following blepharoplasty surgery. Your eyes may be sensitive during the initial healing period, and wearing contact lenses could increase the risk of infection or irritation. The length of time may vary depending on the extent of your procedure and your individual healing process.

Will I be able to wear contact lenses after my procedure?

Blepharoplasty can help you achieve a more youthful and refreshed appearance by:

  • Lifting and smoothing the skin around the eyes

  • Removing excess skin or fat

  • Tightening the muscles that support the eyelids
