How can I tell if I need a tummy tuck or liposuction? 

This answer depends on whether your concern centers around excess skin or excess fat. 

• Liposuction is an excellent procedure for removing pockets of fat if you have good skin elasticity, meaning your skin will contract once the fat is removed. 
• A tummy tuck removes excess skin that has been stretched by weight gain or pregnancy and has lost elasticity. It also repairs stretched and separated abdominal muscles that cause a tummy bulge. 

Combining the 2 procedures is common if you have both excess skin and fat.  

Can I have a tummy tuck if I'm 25 pounds overweight? 

A tummy tuck is not weight loss surgery. Our plastic surgeons advise patients to be within 10 pounds of their optimal body weight before undergoing tummy tuck surgery. To reduce the chances of complications, they also want patients to reach a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or less before the surgery. 

How soon after a tummy tuck can I begin exercising? 

It's important to begin light activity within a day of your operation to aid the healing process. You shouldn't return to the gym, however, until 6 weeks after the surgery. Even then, it's important to return to your normal workout routine gradually. That will probably take another 2 weeks. You shouldn't do abdominal exercises or core training for at least 2 months.  

Can a tummy tuck erase pregnancy stretch marks? 

A tummy tuck removes excess skin and can get rid of stretch marks below your belly button. Stretch marks above the belly button can't be removed, but they may be less noticeable through repositioning.

Do scars from a tummy tuck go away? 

While tummy tuck scars do not go away, most are very low on the abdomen, hidden by a bikini or underwear. Your scar will eventually fade, but it can take 6 to 12 months for scars to soften, lose color, and flatten out.
