Benefits

In Austin, rhinoplasty is popular with women and men of all ages. It can even be performed on teens if their facial development is complete. People choose this procedure for their own personal reasons, which often include one or more of the following:

  • Making the nose smaller or larger
  • Sculpting away a hump or bump, or narrowing the bridge of the nose
  • Reducing or increasing nostril size
  • Correcting damage due to trauma and restoring free breathing
  • Improving balance between facial features by combining with facial implants

During your consultation, your doctor will allow plenty of time for you to describe what you'd like to change about your nose and will take the time to answer your questions. Dr. Kerr, Dr. Blagg , and Dr. Bekanich put patients at ease with their friendly, approachable personalities and help patients develop realistic expectations. Women and men may choose to combine facelift surgery with rhinoplasty for an even more attractive outcome, when appropriate.

What to Expect

During your consultation and subsequent preoperative appointments, your doctor will review your options with you and refine his surgical plan. Your doctor will discuss each step of your procedure with you to ensure you know exactly how to prepare and what you can expect.

Dr. Kerr, Dr. Blagg , and Dr. Bekanich perform each rhinoplasty procedure in a hospital setting while you are under general anesthesia. You'll likely have the option to make your rhinoplasty an outpatient procedure or spend a night in the hospital. Your doctor will help you decide which choice is the more reasonable one for you.

Your doctor begins the surgery by accessing the interior structures of the nose via incisions inside the nose or across the strip of flesh separating the nostrils, called the columella. These small incisions trace the natural contours of the face, so the resulting scars are typically nearly invisible. Depending on the concerns you wish to address, he may reshape or reposition your nose's cartilage, bone, or both in order to create the size and shape you desire. When performed on its own, rhinoplasty typically lasts no more than a couple of hours.

Recovery & Results

To speed recovery after rhinoplasty, the goal is to minimize swelling and bruising. Swelling usually increases for the first 2 to 3 days before subsiding. For the first 48 hours after surgery, apply cold packs to your eyelids and cheeks — but not your nose — as much as possible. Avoid straining of any kind during these first 2 days of recovery. You can minimize swelling by keeping your head elevated at all times for the first week. We recommend sleeping in a recliner or propped up with pillows.

Typically, you're scheduled for a follow-up appointment after about 1 week. At this appointment, your doctor removes your sutures and dressings and evaluates your healing. Most people feel comfortable enough returning to work or school by the 7-day or 10-day mark. You should avoid strenuous exercise for about 1 month, and your doctor will help you understand when you can resume your favorite activities. The results of your rhinoplasty can last indefinitely.

Common Questions

Is there an age requirement for rhinoplasty?

Although rhinoplasty is popular with adolescent patients, it's important to delay the surgery until the nose is fully developed. This is typically around age 16 for girls and a bit later for boys. This is because additional growth after surgery can alter the results. Dr. Kerr, Dr. Blagg , or Dr. Bekanich will discuss your medical history with you and evaluate your nose during your consultation to ensure you are a good candidate.

How much does rhinoplasty cost?

It's difficult to provide an accurate cost for rhinoplasty via the Internet because many variables go into determining the price. Factors including the significance of the surgery and where it's performed can affect the final cost. In general, rhinoplasty patients can expect to pay between $4,000 and $8,000 for their procedures, although these are by no means hard-and-fast numbers. During your consultation, you are offered a specific estimate that reflects your surgery.

What is functional rhinoplasty?

Functional rhinoplasty is a nose surgery that is done for non-cosmetic reasons, usually to improve breathing and sometimes after an injury. It's common even for those who have never undergone trauma to have a deviated septum or blocked airway. Many people don't realize for years the quality-of-life improvement they can achieve by opening their nasal airways a bit. Dr. Kerr, Dr. Blagg , and Dr. Bekanich use many of the same techniques for functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty, and they also frequently perform a sort of combination procedure that improves both the form and function of the nose.

Will it hurt?

The patients who visit us for rhinoplasty often tell us it didn't hurt as much as they thought it would. Most feel pretty good after 2 to 3 days. Your nose may ache and you may have a dull headache for the first day. It's common to feel like you have a stuffy nose for the first week or so.

When will I see results?

The greatest change will take place within about 4 to 6 weeks as swelling diminishes. In many cases, it takes up to a year to achieve the final results, especially if the surgery reshapes the tip of the nose.

What is open rhinoplasty?

During an open rhinoplasty, the incision is made along the columella, where the skin between the nostrils meets the upper lip. The resulting scar is usually unnoticeable because it's placed along this natural crease and fades quickly.

What is closed rhinoplasty?

During a closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made within the nostrils.

What is revision rhinoplasty?

Revision rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is performed to correct the results of a previous rhinoplasty. This secondary procedure is more complicated than an initial rhinoplasty because of reduced cartilage, scar tissue, and the delicate nature of the nasal structures. It's very important to make sure your surgeon is trained and experienced when having a revision procedure.

When can I swim after rhinoplasty?

Patients can usually go swimming 2 to 3 weeks after their rhinoplasty. This depends on the specifics of your procedure and how strenuously you plan to swim. Avoid wearing goggles for 4 weeks as it puts pressure on the nose. Avoid exposure to the sun for the first 8 weeks.
