At the heart of a Mommy Makeover is a simple goal: feeling as confident and happy with your body as you did prior to having children. For most women, the procedure is a way to restore their breasts and midsection, as those are the areas that are most affected by pregnancy.
What Does a Mommy Makeover Consist Of?
Because every woman is unique, every Mommy Makeover is unique as well. Our surgeons take the time to listen to each patient’s cosmetic goals and work with her to decide which combination of procedures will provide the desired improvements. Many women choose from the following:
Tummy tuck gives moms an improved abdominal area by addressing the bulges that diet and exercise cannot. This is generally a combination of removing loose skin and repairing stretched abdominal muscles for a flatter tummy.
Breast lift rejuvenates breasts stretched during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The goal of this procedure is to raise the breasts to a higher position and restore a firm, youthful breast shape. The nipples may be reshaped during this procedure as well.
Breast augmentation adds volume to the breasts with either saline or silicone breast implants. It can restore the breast size you had before your baby or give you the fuller breast size you’ve always wanted. Fat grafting can provide a subtler increase in breast size for patients who want an alternative to implants.
Breast augmentation revision is a popular option among moms who had breast implant surgery earlier in life but now wish to change their size or correct for any unwanted changes from pregnancy. Moms also choose this procedure to replace their saline implants for newer, more natural-feeling silicone implants.
Labiaplasty can reduce and reshape enlarged, stretched, and misshapen labia. Benefits include enhanced confidence and increased comfort during sexual intercourse or vigorous exercise.
Liposuction provides a lasting way to reduce areas of stubborn fat — specifically, those pockets of fat that do not respond to even your best efforts at fitness and nutrition. Our doctors use this very versatile procedure to address areas as diverse as the neck, thighs, and love handles.
That said, there is no set combination of procedures for a Mommy Makeover. You may choose from the above or other procedure options. Together you and your surgeon will develop a custom surgical plan based on your unique aesthetic goals.
If you are considering breast augmentation as part of your Mommy Makeover, you can schedule a breast implant “test drive”. This private, informative appointment with one of our patient coordinators will give you a chance to ask questions, feel actual breast implants, and even try on implants of varying sizes before you schedule a consultation with one of our plastic surgeons.

How Long Does It Take to Recover From a Mommy Makeover?
The specifics of your recovery will vary quite a bit based on the combination of procedures you choose, but to give your an idea of what to expect, we do list our postoperative instructions for many procedures online. There are also some common experiences among all patients, no matter which procedures they choose:
Mommy Makeovers are typically outpatient procedures. You will be able to return home the day of surgery in the care of a friend or family member.
Soreness, swelling, and bruising will likely develop in the first days following your procedure. Take this time to let others help you out around the house, especially with the care of your children.
While you should curb all strenuous physical activity for the first week or two, you will need to go on short walks (as in, around the house) to maintain healthy blood flow.
We will schedule your initial follow-up visit within the first week after surgery and maintain regular contact with you to make sure you are healing normally.
The timeline for your final results will vary somewhat based on the procedures in your Mommy Makeover, but it’s safe to assume that your results will continue to emerge and improve over the first 3 to 6 months.
Mommy Makeover FAQ
What is the most common combination of procedures in a Mommy Makeover?
The “classic” version of a Mommy Makeover consists of a breast enhancement procedure and a tummy tuck, often with liposuction to sculpt the waistline and reduce stubborn pockets of abdominal fat.
What is the advantage of combining procedures?
There are 2 major reasons why combining procedures is better in the long run: cost and recovery time. By combining procedures, there are certain costs incurred for each procedure that you will only pay once (e.g., use of a surgical facility, anesthesia fees). Read our Pricing page to learn more. While it can be challenging to take time out for surgery and recovery, combining procedures means you are also consolidating your recovery periods instead of having a separate recovery period for each procedure.
How soon after having children can I have a Mommy Makeover?
Pregnancy itself is a major stressor on the body, and at a minimum, we generally recommend that moms hold off at least 6 months to give their bodies time to heal and get back to normal. However, if you decide to breastfeed, you will need to wait at least 3 months after you’ve weaned your baby.
Please also keep in mind that a Mommy Makeover will inhibit your ability to engage in physical activity for a few weeks — including lifting your children. For this reason, some women decide to delay the procedure until their babies are a bit older.
I plan to have more children. Is it OK for me to have a Mommy Makeover?
Anatomically speaking, yes. Having a Mommy Makeover will not change your ability to have more children or carry them to term safely. However, just as pregnancy has caused the changes you are now seeking to correct, a subsequent pregnancy after surgery will likely produce very similar unwanted changes.
We strongly recommend that patients wait to have a Mommy Makeover until they are sure that they do not want to have any more children.
Is Mommy Makeover surgery only for mothers?
You do not have to be a mother to get a Mommy Makeover. The surgery got its name because the combination of procedures addresses many of the most common post-pregnancy cosmetic concerns; however, it’s also beneficial for anyone looking to reclaim their body after significant weight loss or other major changes.
Are Mommy Makeovers worth it?
The answer to this question is a highly personal one, but most patients would answer with a resounding “yes.” Mommy Makeovers have a 95% “Worth It” rating on the patient review site RealSelf, one of the highest ratings of all plastic surgery procedures.
