Neck Lift

The delicate skin of the neck can be a source of stress for many people as they age. Years of sun exposure and the natural process of aging can leave this vulnerable area with a loose, “crepey” texture, wrinkles, and localized pockets of fat. Neck lift surgery by our Austin plastic surgeons smooths and improves the neck for a youthful-looking profile that still looks very natural.

Benefits

If you’re considering a neck lift, you may have already noticed that different parts of your face age at different rates. For most people in their 40s, 50s, and up, sagging and wrinkles in the lower face and neck are some of the first — and most obvious — signs of age. A neck lift can alleviate the following concerns:

  • Excessive loose and sagging skin
  • Vertical banding sometimes called a “turkey wattle”
  • Fat deposits that contribute to bulges

Our plastic surgeons understand that achieving a result that looks natural is of utmost importance to all patients. In order to achieve a more comprehensive improvement, our doctors often perform neck lift surgery in conjunction with a facelift or brow and eyelid surgery. Non-surgical options such as BOTOX® Cosmetic injections also partner well. The addition of these procedures to a neck lift can lead to a lasting overall improvement. During your consultation, your doctor takes the time to explain your options to you, helping you choose the course of action that fits you best.

What to Expect

Neck lift surgery is generally an outpatient procedure, and your doctor gives you a detailed timeline prior to your procedure.

Once you are anesthetized, your doctor typically makes a few small incisions beneath your chin or behind your ears. Once healed, these incisions are very discreet. Your surgeon surgically tightens loose muscles and may remove excess fat. They also trim away excessive skin for a smoother contour. Your doctor can take several different surgical approaches that depend on the specific concerns you’d like to address, and they’ll give you a better idea about what’s appropriate for you before your surgery.

Recovery & Results

You will likely return home the day of your neck lift surgery, unless it is combined with other procedures and you choose an overnight stay. Be sure to arrange for a trusted friend or family member to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

It is normal to have swelling, bruising, and moderate discomfort after surgery. It is important to keep your head upright at all times for several days. This minimizes swelling and allows the incisions to heal well.

It is normal to experience some tightness around the jaw, chin, and neck as an initial side effect that may be heightened because of swelling. These symptoms usually fade within a few weeks of surgery with proper rest and care.

Most neck lift patients are ready to return to work and other daily activities within 10 to 14 days, although working out and other strenuous activities should be postponed for at least 4 weeks. Patients enjoy a smoother, firmer neckline for years after surgery.

Common Questions

What is the difference between a neck lift and neck liposuction?

Neck lift surgery is a comprehensive procedure that treats loose skin, sagging muscles, and other signs of physical aging. During neck lift surgery, your doctor cuts away excess skin to give your neck an attractive, smooth contour. Thus, the procedure is appropriate for people who have significant neck aging. On the other hand, neck liposuction specifically removes excess fat from the neck and under the chin. It’s appropriate for people who have skin with a good amount of elasticity and are bothered by very specific fat deposits. In some cases, our doctors incorporate liposuction into neck lift surgery, but it’s important to remember that these are two different types of surgery.

How long does neck lift surgery take?

When performed on its own, neck lift surgery usually lasts about 1 hour to 90 minutes. However, when it’s added to another procedure, the surgery itself will be longer. Your doctor gives you a specific timeline during your pre-op appointments.

How long will my results last?

Unfortunately, no type of plastic surgery can completely stop the clock on aging. However, a neck lift can delay the process and keep you looking younger than your peers for many years. In general, neck lift patients say their results look great for 10 to 15 years. To prolong your results, be sure you practice good sun protection habits, refrain from smoking, and use quality skincare products at home.
