Benefits

Liposuction sculpts away unwanted fat deposits that can remain in spite of a healthy lifestyle. It is not designed to be a weight-loss method. One of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the nation, liposuction can improve your appearance from top to bottom in many ways, including:

  • Sculpting the chin, jawline, and neck
  • Improving the appearance of the upper arms
  • Eliminating bulges from the hips, waist, thighs, and tummy
  • Complementing other cosmetic procedures like a facelift or tummy tuck

Your doctor may also incorporate liposuction techniques into breast reduction in certain cases. We provide a comfortable, unhurried setting for your initial consultation in which your doctor will explain what can and cannot be accomplished with liposuction and review your treatment options.

How Do I Know If I Need Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck?

We perform liposuction to remove areas of excess fat. A tummy tuck removes excess stretched skin and stretch marks, and it tightens and repairs stretched and separated abdominal muscles. Most patients who want to improve the appearance of their midsections, often after pregnancy or significant weight loss, require a tummy tuck. If you don’t have these concerns and are instead simply interested in treated love handles or fat around your belly button, liposuction might provide the improvements you are looking for.

Alternatives to Liposuction

We offer CoolSculpting® Elite as a nonsurgical alternative to liposuction for less significant fat reduction. CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared body contouring treatment that minimizes fat deposits by freezing and destroying targeted fat cells. Our doctors strive to clearly understand their patients’ goals and then develop realistic expectations for their results.

What to Expect

Our doctors perform liposuction as an outpatient procedure. Depending on the areas you wish to treat, you may be under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Either way, you’ll know exactly what to expect prior to your procedure. Your doctor makes a very small incision on the targeted areas and saturates the unwanted fat with a special solution called tumescent fluid. This fluid contains ingredients that cause the fat to swell, easing extraction. It also reduces bleeding and makes the procedure safer and more comfortable. Once the fat is ready for removal, he/she inserts a thin, hollow tube called a cannula through the incisions. This cannula is then used to loosen and suction away fat.

Your doctor may also use SAFELipo®, a special technique that thoroughly separates fat prior to removal and then smooths the remaining layer of fat for even, consistent results. Our doctors often recommend SAFELipo as an alternative to laser liposuction for their Austin patients.

The length of your procedure depends on how many areas you wish to treat; your doctor will give you a better estimate during your consultation. You may return home after a brief period of observation, although you will need to have a friend or loved one drive you.

Can Liposuction Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Yes, our surgeons combine liposuction with other body contouring and breast enhancement procedures as part of Mommy Makeover surgery. The procedures typically included in a Mommy Makeover are:

Liposuction is also used for certain male breast reduction cases and to remove fat used for fat grafting procedures.

Recovery & Results

Although you will likely have some initial swelling and bruising, your improved contours will be noticeable right after your procedure. You will need to wear compression garments for the first few weeks to minimize swelling and encourage optimal results. Most patients are ready to resume their normal routines within 3 to 5 days; however, you should avoid more vigorous activities for 4 to 6 weeks.

Results are long-lasting; however, the fat cells that remain around your body can still enlarge if you gain weight. It’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to help your results last as long as possible.

How Much Time Will I Need to Take Off Work?

Most patients can return to work in 3 to 5 days depending on the type of work they do and the extent of their procedure.

When Will I See Results?

The results from liposuction develop gradually for several weeks after the procedure as swelling fades. Patients also retain fluid from the procedure, so it’s typical not to see a significant weight loss right away. Once healed, patients are typically thrilled to see that their fat is gone in all the right places.

Common Liposuction Questions

Will I be left with sagging skin after liposuction?

Liposuction doesn’t remove enough fat to create excessive sagging skin. Healthy skin is highly resilient and typically has few problems “bouncing back.” If you’re concerned by the potential for sagging skin after your procedure, share your concerns with your doctor during your consultation. Your doctor will perform a careful evaluation of the areas you wish to treat and help you determine whether liposuction is the most appropriate course of action. He would not treat an area to excess if doing so would leave unfavorable results behind.

How much fat loss can I expect from my liposuction procedure?

This depends on the area of the body that you treat. Although liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure, it can noticeably improve your body’s contours. For example, if you undergo liposuction on your abdomen or hips, you’ll likely notice your favorite clothes fitting better, and you may even drop a size or more. If you have liposuction to refine your chin and neck, you’ll notice a sleeker, more pleasing profile that no longer causes you to shy away from photographs. During your consultation, your doctor will help you better understand the results you can anticipate from your procedure.

Will I have scars from liposuction?

During liposuction, the surgeon removes excess fat through tiny incisions in the skin using a long, slim tube called a cannula. The incisions leave tiny scars, typically 3 to 5 mm long. The incisions can often be placed in inconspicuous areas such as in natural creases of the body or in areas that are usually covered by underwear. When you choose an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon, it’s likely that no one will know you had liposuction unless you tell them.

There are so many types of liposuction available these days. What’s the difference?

The main difference between the various types of liposuction such as ultrasonic and laser liposuction that many practices in Austin, Texas, are advertising is the way the excess fat is dislodged. With traditional tumescent liposuction, targeted areas are infused with tumescent fluid, which makes the areas firm and inhibits bleeding. Next, a cannula is inserted under the skin and moved in and out to dislodge the excess fat. The other kinds of liposuction break up the excess fat in a variety of ways, including vibration, ultrasound, laser energy, and even warm water. The advantage of these technologies is that the fat removal process can be quicker and gentler.

Will liposuction cause cellulite?

Liposuction does not cause cellulite; however, it doesn’t eliminate cellulite either. Cellulite is caused by fibrous bands that connect the upper layer of skin to the tissue below. As fat cells enlarge during weight gain, dimples may appear on the surface of the skin. This orange peel appearance is called cellulite. In some cases, liposuction improves the appearance of cellulite by reducing the tension of the bands, but for many people, the dimples remain. If the fat is removed unevenly, treated areas can appear lumpy and uneven, which may look a bit like cellulite.

When can I begin exercising again?

After liposuction, most patients are ready for walking and low-impact activities after 3 to 5 days. After 2 weeks, you may gradually increase your activity level and expect to be back to your normal exercise routine by 6 weeks. We usually recommend avoiding strenuous activities for 3 weeks.
