How old do I need to be to have a face lift?
There are no hard-and-fast age parameters when it comes to facelift surgery, although most patients undergoing the surgery are between 40 and 70 years old. Candidacy is dependent on a few factors, including significant aging of the lower face. Overall health is also important, as facelift surgery requires general anesthesia. During your consultation, your doctor helps you determine whether facelift surgery is a viable option for you or whether you'd be better served by a different procedure.
How much does a facelift cost?
You will be provided with a personalized quote during your consultation. We cannot provide an exact number beforehand, because there are several factors that go into the cost of a facelift at our Austin practice:
- The surgical technique
- The degree of correction needed
- The addition of other procedures (as applicable)
In general, the cost for a facelift ranges from $8,000 to $10,000. While cost is a necessary consideration, it's important to choose your surgeon primarily on qualifications and experience performing the desired procedure.
We also offer financing to help make procedures financially feasible for qualified patients.
Will a facelift improve my entire face?
Many people mistakenly believe that facelift surgery removes forehead lines, crow's feet, and other concerns of the upper face. However, a face lift actually focuses on the lower two-thirds of the face, the area where most people see the most significant signs of aging. If you're primarily concerned by aging or sagging of the upper face, you may get a more favorable outcome from brow or eyelid surgery. In some cases, these procedures can be combined with facelift surgery for a more thorough outcome. A neck lift is also a good partner procedure that our doctors frequently perform with a face lift.
Are there non-surgical alternatives to a face lift?
While only facelift surgery can deliver facelift-caliber results, other forms of facial rejuvenation can postpone the need for surgery. For example, BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers can ease the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Some fillers can also add volume for a subtle "lifted" appearance. Additionally, laser skin rejuvenation can address uneven skin and fine lines. When strategically administered, these services can yield impressive improvements.
Will I have dietary restrictions after surgery?
No. Most cosmetic surgery procedures don't require any sort of significant dietary changes. However, some facelift patients find it more comfortable to stick with liquids or soft foods for several days after surgery, thanks to the location of facelift incisions. This is strictly a matter of personal preference, and you may resume eating your favorite foods as soon as you feel ready. You will have restrictions on certain medications, though, because some common supplements and painkillers can increase bleeding and bruising. Your doctor will provide you with thorough instructions about which medications to avoid.
Is recuperation painful?
Many patients are pleasantly surprised to learn that recuperation following a face lift is not overly painful. Most people feel ready to resume their regular activities before they look ready — this is because the complex vascular structures in the face and neck can cause a lot of bruising and swelling. Most patients say they felt confident enough to go out in public around day 10. Many of our Austin facelift patients choose to work remotely for several days during their recuperations because they are physically comfortable enough to get some work done in the privacy of their own homes.
Will I need another facelift in the future?
Although the results of facelift surgery are not forever, they can last for many years, especially by maintaining a steady weight and practicing good sun protection habits. The decision to undergo an additional facelift at a later date depends on your own personal preferences. Some patients choose to extend their results with non-surgical treatments. Because facelift surgery takes years off a person's face, most patients continue to look younger than their true ages despite the fact that the aging process continues.
Will my facelift results be obvious?
No. Outdated techniques used for facelift surgery often relied heavily on stretching and tightening skin, which eliminated wrinkles but also created an unnatural, "windblown" appearance. Today's methods focus more on deeper structural changes that actually improve the position and quality of facial muscles for a more comprehensive, long-lasting result. This approach, coupled with very discreet scars that can usually be hidden within the hairline, make the results of today's facelift surgery extremely subtle and quite natural-looking. You won't be completely transformed — you'll simply look like a younger version of yourself.
