Do you dream about turning back the clock with a facelift but hesitate because you’re concerned it might be obvious you had surgery? Plastic surgeons have long since evolved from the tight, “windblown” look of the past, but you might still wonder whether your facelift scars will detract from your rejuvenated look.

To alleviate your concerns, we’ve put together the following guide. Keep reading to learn more about the Synergy Plastic Surgery approach to facelifts, optimizing your recovery, and whether your facelift scars can be imperceptible!

Surgical Precision & Scarring

As board-certified plastic surgeons, my colleagues and I understand the importance of discretion when performing any sort of cosmetic or reconstructive procedure. That’s why we approach each facelift with the utmost care and commitment to serving your unique needs.

Our modern facelift techniques prioritize the most natural-looking results possible with minimal evidence of surgery. We hide our incisions within the hairline and along the natural creases in front of the ear to keep visible scarring as inconspicuous as possible.

My fellow surgeons and I also use meticulous suturing techniques and provide our patients with postoperative care instructions to promote optimal healing. In other words, the Synergy team takes great care to ensure you feel confident showing off your revitalized appearance!

Navigating Facelift Recovery

While no surgical facelift can be truly scar-free, you can take steps to make your incision lines nearly imperceptible. In our facelift patients’ before and after photos below, you can see how facial rejuvenation looks effortlessly natural without calling attention to the signs of surgery.

Most patients need 2 weeks of downtime after surgery for swelling and bruising to subside. While some discomfort is common in the first few days, this period is more about the “social downtime” needed before patients feel comfortable being seen in public.

To manage your recovery process, we will guide you on caring for your incisions, controlling swelling, and easing back into activities. You’ll need to limit your sun exposure, keep your head elevated (even at night), and sleep on your back. We will help you prepare for what to expect so you can make the most of your time off.

Tips for Minimizing Scars

Our surgical technique is only part of the equation for minimal scarring. You have an important role to play in scar management too! Here are some tips that can help:

  • Massage the Scar Tissue: Once sutures are removed and there are no scabs or breaks in the skin, gently massaging the scar tissue can keep the skin soft, flexible, and less sensitive.
  • Use Silicone Gel or Sheets: Silicone-based products effectively reduce the visibility of scars when applied consistently.
  • Limit Sun Exposure: Protecting your incisions from the sun helps minimize their appearance while allowing your scars to mature as seamlessly as possible.
  • Maintain Your Overall (Skin) Health: Leading a healthy lifestyle, staying hydrating, eating well, and committing to a high-quality skincare regimen can support your skin as the scars heal.
  • Consider Laser Therapy: Laser skin resurfacing may be an option to further refine the appearance of scars and enhance your skin’s texture and radiance.
  • Be Patient: Your scars will continue to lighten and fade as they mature over several months. Trust the process and enjoy your revitalized appearance!
