What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to:

  • Remove excess, sagging skin
  • Tighten separated or weakened abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)
  • Eliminate stubborn fat deposits
  • Reshape the belly button for a natural appearance
  • Enhance the waistline’s contour

This procedure is particularly beneficial for individuals who have experienced significant weight loss or pregnancy, leading to stretched skin and muscles that do not respond to diet and exercise.

Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

Each patient has their own reasons for pursuing tummy tuck surgery. Common motivations include:

  • Removing loose, sagging skin after pregnancy or significant weight loss
  • Tightening weakened or separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)
  • Smoothing and flattening the midsection for a more contoured silhouette
  • Improving the fit of clothing and restoring confidence in your appearance

At Synergy Plastic Surgery, our surgeons tailor every tummy tuck to your body’s unique needs—whether you’re focused on restoring your pre-baby figure or achieving a slimmer, more sculpted look. The result is a tighter, flatter abdomen that aligns with your lifestyle and aesthetic goals.

Tummy Tuck Options

We offer several tummy tuck techniques to address varying needs:

Full Tummy Tuck

This procedure addresses the entire abdominal area, removing excess skin and fat, tightening muscles, and repositioning the belly button. It is ideal for those with significant skin laxity and muscle separation.

Mini Tummy Tuck

This approach focuses on the area below the belly button, removing a smaller amount of skin and fat without repositioning the belly button. It is suitable for individuals with minimal excess skin and good muscle tone.

Fleur-de-Lis Tummy Tuck

A fleur-de-lis tummy tuck removes more skin than a full tummy tuck by adding a vertical incision from the pubic bone up the midline to the breastbone. This technique tightens skin both vertically and horizontally, significantly reshaping the hips and waist. It is often used for patients who have undergone massive weight loss and it tightens both the abdomen and waistline.

How Is Abdominoplasty Performed?

Tummy tuck surgery is performed in our private, state-of-the-art surgery center as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision, typically spanning from hip to hip but concealed by underwear or swimsuits, to remove excess skin, repair abdominal muscles, and reposition the belly button. If desired, liposuction may be used to sculpt the abdomen, hips, and thighs.

Your Tummy Tuck Recovery Guide

Recovery from a tummy tuck usually takes about 2 to 3 weeks. Here’s what to expect:

  • Incision Care: Your incisions will start to heal within the first 48 hours after surgery. However, it typically takes 6 to 8 weeks before they are healed well enough for you to safely submerge them in water. Throughout this period, it’s essential to keep the area clean and dry, and to follow your surgeon’s specific care instructions closely to support proper healing.
  • Drains: Your surgeon may place surgical drains to prevent fluid buildup in your abdominal area during recovery. These drains need to be emptied and cleaned regularly at home. Your surgeon will provide instructions for care and will remove the drains during a follow-up appointment once drainage has decreased to an appropriate level.
  • Compression Garments: Swelling and bruising are normal after surgery, typically peaking around day three and gradually improving over the next 2 to 4 weeks. You’ll be provided with a compression garment, which you should wear continuously, day and night, for 4 to 6 weeks. This garment helps reduce swelling and supports your new abdominal contours as they form.
  • Sleeping: For the first couple of weeks, it’s best to sleep in a reclined position to reduce swelling, minimize tension on your incisions, and make it easier to get in and out of bed. A recliner works well, but you can also sleep propped up with pillows in bed to maintain a similar position.
  • Standing Upright: For the first 2 to 3 weeks after surgery, you may be unable to fully stand upright. This is a normal part of the healing process as your body adjusts to the tighter skin and repaired muscles.
  • Walking: Gentle movement is encouraged soon after surgery—ideally, the evening of your procedure or the following day. Light walking around your home helps promote healthy circulation and supports healing.
  • Exercise: Most patients can resume light activity between 10 and 15 days after surgery, with slightly quicker recovery possible after a mini tummy tuck. However, all patients should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for at least 6 weeks to prevent complications and allow optimal healing.
  • Scars: After the incisions close, protect your scars from sun exposure by keeping them covered or applying sunscreen, as UV rays can cause discoloration. It may take up to a year for your scars to fade and soften, transitioning from red and raised to smoother and less noticeable.
  • Final Results: Achieving your full tummy tuck results takes time. As residual swelling resolves and the tissues settle, it can take up to a year for your abdomen to appear completely flat and firm, and for scars to mature.

You will receive detailed post-operative instructions to aid your recovery.

Mini Tummy Tuck vs. Full Tummy Tuck

While both procedures rejuvenate the abdominal contours, they differ in scope:

Mini Tummy Tuck:

  • Single short horizontal incision on the lower abdomen
  • Removes a small amount of loose skin below the belly button
  • Does not tighten abdominal muscles or reshape the belly button
  • Revises a C-section scar (if desired).

Complete Tummy Tuck:

  • Two incisions: one horizontal from hip to hip and another around the belly button
  • Removes lax skin above and below the belly button
  • Repairs separated abdominal muscles and reshapes the belly button
  • Revises a C-section scar (if desired).

Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction

While both procedures aim to improve body contours, they serve different purposes:

  • Liposuction: Removes fat deposits but does not address excess skin or muscle laxity.

In some cases, combining both procedures yields optimal results.

Combining Procedures

Combining procedures can reduce overall recovery time and provide more dramatic transformations. Breast enhancement procedures such as breast augmentation or breast lift are often combined with a tummy tuck as part of a Mommy Makeover.

Tummy Tuck FAQs

What disqualifies you from a tummy tuck?

You should not be pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the near future. You should be a non-smoker (or willing to stop before and after surgery), not be significantly overweight, or have a serious health condition such as heart disease or diabetes.

What is the BMI cut-off for abdominoplasty?

Our plastic surgeons advise patients to be within 10 pounds of their optimal body weight before undergoing tummy tuck surgery. To reduce the chances of complications, they also want patients to reach a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or less before the surgery.

How painful is a tummy tuck?

During the initial recovery period, prescription medication typically manages discomfort. By closely following post-op instructions, you can also minimize pain during the recovery.

At what age should you not have a tummy tuck?

Tummy tucks can benefit adults of all ages who meet the criteria for being a good candidate. However, the healing process often takes longer as you get older.

How many sizes do you drop after a tummy tuck?

After attaining their final tummy tuck results, patients typically are able to wear clothing that is 2 to 3 sizes smaller.
