Plastic Surgery Can Help Keep the Weight Off!

A recent study shows that bariatric patients who go on to have body contouring procedures such as tummy tucks and breast lifts or breast enhancement procedures are more likely to keep the weight off.  The study further states that body contouring should be considered reconstructive rather than cosmetic in many patients who have achieved massive weight loss.

The study looked at about 100 patients who had body contouring procedures which unusually consisted of an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) often combined with other procedures like a breast or arm lift.  They also looked at about 100 patients who had bariatric surgery without any subsequent plastic surgery procedures.

Both groups lost an average of nearly 100lbs but it was the plastic surgery group that showed a greater ability to keep the pounds off at a revisit 7 years after their initial surgery.  Patients who underwent body contouring procedures gained on average only 14 pounds back while their cohort who did not have any plastic surgery done gained 50 pounds back.

According to Dr. Kerr, “body contouring is really essential to any weight loss experience and can also work wonders to restore changes in your body after pregnancy.  Plastic surgery procedures of this type often have a profound positive effect on your mental health as well with most patients reporting a significant increase in their self-esteem and body image.”
