Are There Long Term Risks Associated With Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are one of the safest cosmetic procedures currently available, ringing in as the second most performed non-invasive treatment. However, like any procedure or treatment, many patients wonder if there are long term effects of consistent dermal filler use. There are many common misconceptions about dermal filler use. Read on to learn more about dermal filler and the long term effects of their use!

Risks or Reactions to Dermal Fillers

According to the National Library of Medicine, adverse reactions to dermal fillers can be divided into immediate-to-short term, which primarily occur within the first 1–2 weeks. Long-term reactions are reported to occur within several weeks to months after treatment. This means that while reactions are very rare and uncommon, if they were to occur, they occur shortly after treatment.

Adverse reactions are almost always treatable and leave no permanent effects.  Uncommon reactions associated with dermal fillers are:

  • Vascular Occlusion: When filler is injected into or around an artery, blood flow may be reduced or stopped. Skin may look pale in color and start to turn blue over a period of 24 hours. This is usually painful, and if untreated, the skin may begin to ‘die’ and turn black. For this reason, it is imperative that your injector is experienced, skilled, and knowledgeable.
  • Allergic Reaction: If your body is sensitive to the synthetic substance injected. You may experience redness and swelling around the injection area. Our board-certified plastic surgeons always perform a Health & Physical Exam upon your first visit to ensure that all allergies are noted prior to your treatment.
  • Inflammatory Reaction: Remember that you are entering a foreign substance into the body, and it can irritate your immune system.
  • Scarring: You can rest assured that scarring after injections is very rare. If injections are done improperly, injury can follow at the point of injection which can lead to scarring.  This potential risk can be entirely avoided by ensuring that you are being treated by an experienced, skilled, and knowledgeable injected. Always be sure to ask for before and after pictures of your injectors work, as well as a CV to have a better understanding of their experience and training prior to your treatment!
