View All Before & After Photos View All Cases Request a ConsultationDuring liposuction, the surgeon removes excess fat through tiny incisions in the skin using a long, slim tube called a cannula. The incisions leave tiny scars, typically 3 to 5 mm long. The incisions can often be placed in inconspicuous areas such as in natural creases of the body or in areas that are usually covered by underwear. When you choose a trained and experienced plastic surgeon, it's likely that no one will know you had liposuction unless you tell them.
The main difference between the various types of liposuction such as ultrasonic and laser liposuction that many practices in Austin, Texas, are advertising is in the way the excess fat is dislodged. With traditional tumescent liposuction, targeted areas are infused with tumescent fluid, which makes the areas firm and inhibits bleeding. Next, a cannula is inserted under the skin and moved in and out to dislodge the excess fat. The other kinds of liposuction break up the excess fat in a variety of ways including vibration, ultrasound, laser energy, and even warm water. The advantage of these technologies is that the fat removal process can be quicker and gentler.
We perform liposuction to remove areas of excess fat. A tummy tuck removes excess stretched skin and stretch marks, and it tightens and repairs stretched and separated abdominal muscles. Most patients who want to improve the appearance of their midsections, often after pregnancy or significant weight loss, require a tummy tuck. If you don't have these concerns and are instead simply interested in treated love handles or fat around your belly button, liposuction might provide the improvements you are looking for.
Liposuction does not cause cellulite; however, it doesn't eliminate cellulite either. Cellulite is caused by fibrous bands that connect the upper layer of skin to the tissue below. As fat cells enlarge during weight gain, dimples may appear on the surface of the skin. This orange peel appearance is called cellulite. In some cases, liposuction improves the appearance of cellulite by reducing the tension of the bands; but, for many people the dimples remain. If the fat is removed unevenly, treated areas can appear lumpy and uneven, which may look a bit like cellulite.
The results from liposuction develop gradually for several weeks after the procedure as swelling fades. Patients also retain fluid from the procedure, so it's typical not to see a significant weight loss right away. Once healed, patients are typically thrilled to see that their fat is gone in all the right places.
Most patients can return to work in 3 to 5 days depending on the type of work they do and the extent of their procedure.
After liposuction, most patients are ready for walking and low-impact activities after 3 to 5 days. After 2 weeks, you may gradually increase your activity level and expect to be back to your normal exercise routine by 6 weeks. We usually recommend avoiding strenuous activities for 3 weeks. Although liposuctioned, fat cells will not return, you will need to eat right and exercise regularly to maintain your improved contours.
