How can I tell if I need a tummy tuck or liposuction?
Determining whether you need a tummy tuck or liposuction depends on whether your concern centers around excess skin or excess fat. Liposuction is an excellent procedure to remove pockets of fat if you have good skin elasticity, meaning your skin will contract once the fat is removed. A tummy tuck, on the other hand, removes excess skin, often when it has been stretched by weight gain or pregnancy and has lost elasticity. Combining the 2 procedures is common if you have both excess skin and fat. These options are also often combined with breast enhancement surgery in an operation known as a mommy makeover.
Can I have a tummy tuck if I'm 25 pounds overweight?
A tummy tuck is not weight-loss surgery. Our plastic surgeons advise patients to be within 10 pounds of their optimal body weight before undergoing tummy tuck surgery. To reduce the chances of complications, they also want patients to reach a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or less before the surgery.
How much does a tummy tuck cost?
The final cost of a tummy tuck depends on multiple factors, including the extent of your surgery (e.g., mini tummy tuck or full), whether you decide to combine it with other procedures, and fees for anesthesia and the use of the surgical facility. During your consultation, we will provide you with a written quote that outlines the cost of your tummy tuck after you and your surgeon have discussed all the particulars of your procedure.
How soon after a tummy tuck can I begin exercising?
It's important to begin light activity within a day of your operation to aid the healing process. You shouldn't return to the gym, however, until 6 weeks after the surgery. Even then, it's important to gradually return to your normal workout routine. That will probably take another 2 weeks. You shouldn't do abdominal exercises or core training for at least 2 months. Some patients who feel fine begin vigorous exercise earlier, only to find out a couple of days later that they overdid it.
How visible will my scar be?
Our plastic surgeons are body contouring specialists who makes incisions that will leave the most inconspicuous scar possible. Most tummy tuck scars are very low on the abdomen so they are hidden by a bikini or underwear. You should also remember that scars fade, and it can take 6 to 12 months for scars to soften, lose color, and flatten out. Our medical team can also give you advice on products and ways to care for your scars so they heal quickly and beautifully.
Can a tummy tuck erase pregnancy stretch marks?
A tummy tuck removes excess skin and can get rid of stretch marks below your belly button. Stretch marks above the belly button can't be removed, but they may be less noticeable through repositioning.
Should I have a mini or full tummy tuck?
This can only be assessed through a physical examination. Keep in mind that a mini tummy tuck removes a relatively small amount of loose abdominal skin, and it doesn't tighten the stomach muscles. If you've had children, a complete tummy tuck is probably the better choice.
